Mental Health Medications

Understand commonly prescribed mental-health medications, how different drug classes work, possible side effects and questions to discuss with a healthcare professional.

This section explains medication classes in general terms. It does not provide personal prescribing or dosing guidance. Always make medication decisions with a qualified prescriber, and never stop a medication suddenly without medical advice.

Questions to ask before starting a medication

Bring these to your appointment. A good prescriber will welcome them.

  1. Why are you recommending this medication for me, and what are the alternatives — including therapy?
  2. How long will it take to work, and how will we know if it’s helping?
  3. What are the most common side effects, and which ones mean I should contact you?
  4. Does it interact with any other medications, supplements, alcohol or substances I use?
  5. Is it safe if I am pregnant, planning pregnancy or breastfeeding?
  6. How long might I need to take it, and how would I stop safely?
  7. What should I do if I miss a dose?
